Grandparent's Day!

On Wednesday the Prep Neighbourhood hosted Grandparents/Special friends Day. It was a very special morning and all the Prep teachers were so proud of the children's singing and how the children spoke about their learning. The morning began in the gym with the Prep children singing a melody of songs that we have learnt throughout the year. The songs included 'It's a Wonderful World', 'Circle of Friends', 'Days of the Week' and 'The Wheels on the Bus'. After  the singing, morning tea was provided to all the guests by all the families. Thank you to all the families who brought along delicious treats to share. A big thank you to the parents who helped set up and clear away the morning tea.
When all our tummies were full, the Prep children escorted their special guests to the Neighbourhood and explained the learning from our current Inquiry, 'How do you Create a Caring Community?'. The children presented their guest with a special bookmark and read the story they had written about another member of our community.

The Prep team loved meeting everyone's grandparents and special friends and would like to thank everyone for coming along and being part of a special day.

Freya and her special friend, the lovely Julie

Grandparents/Parent/Special Friend Day

Only one week until our special celebration. Yesterday a yellow note went home to explain the morning and at the bottom was a slip to return about how many people will be attending and what small plate of food you will be bringing to share. Tea will be provided and the coffee cart will be making an appearance if you need something a little stronger. Looking forward to seeing everyone on the day.

Talent Quest Sign Up

The talent quest sign up is in the gym at recess tomorrow (Friday 6 Sept).

Children don't need to have an act ready yet. If they have an idea or just the desire to perform, they can get some help and mentoring in creating their own act. All they need to do is sign up this Friday and then come to the talent quest rehearsals each Friday lunchtime in the gym until the Bazaar.

Cheers,

Trudy Radburn
Talent quest coordinator

Junior School Library – new borrowing system to begin in Week 9.

We now have the basis for a morning roster of parents/community members to scan in and out Junior School Library (JSL) books (mornings only to begin with). We will staff the Circulation Computers from around 8.45-9.00am each morning to start this new practice.

Please talk with your child(ren) regarding this new procedure and arrive a little earlier while we settle the new system in. There will be a “RETURNS” box for books to be scanned in. We need children to tell the Helpers their FIRST and FAMILY name when they are borrowing a book.

We would like to offer this returning/borrowing system in the afternoons from 3.25-3.40pm too. To do this we need to have more parents/community helpers trained up to assist with the roster. To offer yourself or a friend, please speak to a Prep, 1 or 2 Neighbourhood teacher and/or email Mark at riley.mark.g@edumail.vic.gov.au

Remember: the main library is open for borrowing Monday-Thursdays 8.50-9.00am. All children welcome.

Regards, Mark Riley

Make Do and our Green Team

Below is a link to a feature article about the Green Team's work on sculptures/installations to support Biodiversity in our external environment. Not all the Green Team were present when the pictures were taken, as it was the 5/6 Canberra trip. Some of the works are still being constructed.

We measured parts of the basketball court using our bodies

Last week, the Neighbourhood made the most of the beautiful weather and headed outside for a Maths workshop. The children began measuring the width of the basketball court using their feet. Ask your child how many of their feet would be needed to go across the basketball court. The Preps wondered how many Preps it would take to go around the basketball court. At first the children were sitting very close to one another, but before long the children were lying down, head to feet. Even with Jessica and Sia joining in there were still gaps.

The children were then encourage to measure the many shapes that they could find on the ground. The children worked so well together to make sure the entire space was covered and to count how many people would fit around the space.

We found that it took 21 Preps lying down to cover the snake, but 65 Preps sitting up to cover the snake.
